Developing the proper brushing and flossing routine is one of the biggest factors in proper oral hygiene. Tooth Decay Prevention

The interaction of natural bacteria on the teeth is one of the leading causes of tooth decay, which is a progressive disease. One of the main catalysts for the growth of the bacteria is sugar. Whenever sugar is consumed, it causes a bacterial reaction that creates harmful acids that eat away at the teeth, which leads to a cavity.

A dentist can remove the decay and fill in the tooth with a filling, improving its condition. Should the tooth decay be extremely severe, there is a chance that it can lead to nerve damage that requires a large filling known as a dental crown.

There are several ways that individuals can avoid tooth decay, including:

  • Flossing and brushing at least twice a day
  • Visiting their dentist regularly
  • Fluoride treatment
  • Diet control

Dental Sealants – Helping to Prevent Cavities

The chewing surfaces on the back teeth are created by depressions and grooves that can be all but impossible to properly clean. Whenever tooth bacteria reacts with food, tooth enamel is eaten away by acids and cavities can form. According to current studies, roughly 90% of all cavities in American school children are caused by bacteria reacting with food.

One of the best ways to protect the depressions and grooves in the back teeth is with the use of tooth sealants. The sealant resin is applied to the premolars, molars and back teeth and any other areas that are susceptible to cavities. The sealant can last for several years, but will need to be regularly examined by a dentist.

Fluoride Treatment for Teeth

One of the best ways to protect the teeth against cavities and help them grow stronger is with a substance called fluoride. Regular brushing and flossing as well as drinking water that has been treated with fluoride are great ways to lower the occurrence of cavities. Dentists can measure how much fluoride is in a main source of drinking water and make a recommendation on fluoride supplements, such as drops or tablets if needed.
